Roz Buick, vice president Heavy Civil Construction at 2122 Trimble, has highlighted some key technology introductions from the firm.

The GCS Flex system is an important introduction for Trimble and Buick explained, “The idea is to install a less complex system. We want to attract customers from the smaller contractors.”

Comparatively low cost for a machine-control system, the basic GCS Flex package offers entry-level 2D technology and it can be upgraded to what Buick calls a ‘2½D’ system.

She added, “You can also upgrade it another step – the full 3D capability – on the same hardware using extra firmware.”

The package is said to be straightforward to use and Buick said, “You don’t have to do data preparation or come up with a design file. You can do the design in the machine cab using the screen.”
In Germany, for example, there are large numbers of small-medium sized contractors and Buick said, “I think it has good potential in Germany.”

Portable and lightweight, the GCS Flex system is relatively simple and quick to install. She said, “We put it in a suitcase so it’s easy to transport.”

The suitcase device features a magnetic back and simply attaches straight on to the machine. “They could install it themselves without a dealer.”

The company’s new demonstrator system is another important development and Buick said that this will be a useful training tool for the Sitech dealer network. She said, “We hope to get simulators set up in the Trimble operator schools. Our goal is to make sure our dealers have at least of these each. We have about 85 Sitech dealers and we aim to have around 100.”

The full system comes with motion simulation and a large screen although there is a more basic version for use on a laptop.
