Costa Rica is planning to carry out crucial maintenance and repairs to roads and bridges across the country. A feasibility study is being carried out that will allow the work to be managed efficiently and prioritised effectively.

Meanwhile, a loan worth nearly US$100 million from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) will help pay for a portion of the work on three road concessions. The road connecting capital San Jose with nearby Cartago, Route 27, is being widened and improved. Widening work is also being carried out on Route 32 from San Jose to Rio Frio as well as the Florencio del Castillo highway.

The upgrade to Route 32 is expected to cost $400 million in total and the design for the project was submitted in April 2021. The concession package for the Florencio del Castillo highway, which includes the widening work, is worth $400 million and was submitted by MECO.

CABEI is also approving $100,000 for studies into a series of road and bridge improvement works. Resurfacing of around 1,100km of roads will be included in the works, as well as the maintenance and repairs of 130 bridges. In addition, new ring roads are planned for Desamparados, Sarchi and Heredia. The improvement works and new ring roads are expected to require a loan worth around $500 million to provide the necessary financing.
