The 63km stretch road is intended to improve transport connections in the north of the country. The work on this road will boost the country’s connections with neighbouring Uganda, helping develop trade and transport between the two nations. The project fits in with a series of road and highway upgrades planned to upgrade transport links across East Africa, which will help with economic development of the region. Better access to ports in Kenya and Tanzania will be of particular importance for landlocked nations such as Rwanda and Uganda. Financing for this road project is being provided by the India Export Import Bank, with the construction work expected to commence in 2019. The tender process has yet to be announced.
