The contractor carrying out a new highway project in Costa Rica is to benefit from an additional set of works. The Solis-La Estrella consortium is building the La Uruca and Route 32 stretch of the new Northern Ring Road (Circunvalacion Norte) project at present. However, Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Works and Transports (MOPT) is wanting the Solis-La Estrella consortium to carry out additional works to build the link with Route 32 as well as an overpass being built at present.

The Solis-La Estrella consortium’s contract for the La Uruca and Route 32 stretch of the new Northern Ring Road (Circunvalacion Norte) project is worth US$163 million. But taking over the additional package of work would add $70.5 million to the firm’s contract.

Funding for the work is being provided in the shape of a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI). Because the Solis-La Estrella consortium already has a contract for road construction work on the new Northern Ring Road (Circunvalacion Norte) project, MOPT believes that it would not be required to reopen this additional portion of work to a new tender process.
