Sri Lanka's roads revamp

Sri Lanka's war ravaged roads will begin to benefit from a massive improvement programme shortly, following the cessation of hostilities. Some US$3 billion is being spent in the north and east of the country according to the Highways Ministry.

Sri Lanka's war ravaged roads will begin to benefit from a massive improvement programme shortly, following the cessation of hostilities. Some US$3 billion is being spent in the north and east of the country according to the Highways Ministry. The project involves developing small roads, by-roads and main roads in major towns including Killinochchi, Kalmunai, Ampara, Trincomalee, Mannar, Vavuniya and Jaffna. Upgrading of the A-9 road linking capital Colombo with Jaffna is also now due to start.

    The Nicaraguan Government is setting out major plans for road infrastructure development. The country's master plan for road infrastructure envisages work to a total of 4,200km of main roads across the country. This programme is expected to cost in the order of US$5.20 billion, according to pre-feasibility studies carried out by Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC). Funding is being sought at present by the Nicaraguan Government, which is in discussion with a number of bodies.

    The authorities in China's Shaanxi Province are working on a rural road improvement programme that will see existing links to outlying areas being upgraded and new transport connections being introduced. Some US$601 million has been budgeted for the work during 2010, with surfacing work being a key priority. In all Shaanxi Province aims to upgrade 10,000km of rural roads that connect to small communities and will also improve roads in the villages.
