Two Macedonia highway projects are delayed

Delays have hit the construction of two new highway projects in Macedonia. Funding for the projects has been provided through a loan package from China worth €574 million.

Delays have hit the construction of two new highway projects in Macedonia. Funding for the projects has been provided through a loan package from China worth €574 million. However issues with regard to compulsory land acquisitions have slowed work on the two projects. There are suggestions that additional costs of as much as €100 million may also be incurred. One of the sections being delayed is the 57km stretch from Ohred to Kicevo while the other is the 50km stretch from capital Skopje to Stip. The construction work is being carried out the by the Chinese contractor 5544 Sinohydro.

    Completion of the Lagos to Ibadan highway upgrade in Nigeria will not occur until 2021. The improvement work was initially to have been delivered by 2017.     A new 1km long tunnel is being planned to help reduce congestion in Skopje, capital of Macedonia. The tunnel will be built by Turkish contractor Limak. The contractor will also build its own commercial development above the tunnel as part of the agreement. The cost of the tunnel project is not available at this point.
