Work is now underway for the project to widen a stretch of the North Tarrant Express route in Tarrant County, Texas. The project is costing US$414 million and is intended to boost capacity, reducing the congestion levels that extend journey times for drivers at peak periods at present.

The work involves adding an extra lane in either direction for I-820. Tolled lanes in either direction will also be added to SH 121, the Airport Freeway, as part of the project.

Completion of the project is scheduled for 2027. The project is being carried out for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

Other components of the North Tarrant Express project have included the 16km work on I-35W from north of I-30 (Downtown Fort Worth) to the I-820 interchange.

According to TxDOT, the completed project will boost capacity and allow for the growing population in the area. This latest stretch forms part of a much wider project to improve traffic flow in the area, costing an estimated $2.5 billion in total and linking with the busy I-35 route.
