Planning work is being carried out for a major interstate redesign project in Miami, Florida. The US$802 million project involves the redesign of I-395 and surveying activities are now commencing. The I-395/SR 836/I-95 Project is being carried out in partnership between the 2697 Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX). The work will be carried out between State Road (SR) 836 beginning at NW 17 Avenue and continuing through the SR 836/I-395/I-95 (Midtown) Interchange to the MacArthur Causeway Bridge. Meanwhile the limits on I-95 are from NW 8 Street to NW 29 Street.

The project is due for completion in the third quarter of 2023 and includes building major bridge links, such as the signature bridge over NE2 Avenue and Biscayne Boulevard and a double-decked section of SR 836 over the Miami River.

According to the project partners, this work will deliver key benefits for safety and mobility. Safety will be improved for commuters by reducing weaving movements associated with drivers entering and exiting SR 836 and I-95 at the Midtown Interchange. Safety will also be enhanced for pedestrians under the new I-395 bridges with creation of a contiguous trail from NW 3 Avenue to Biscayne Boulevard, better crosswalks and new bike lanes. Meanwhile mobility will be improved for residents, commuters and tourists by increasing capacity on SR 836, I-95 and I-395. SR 836 will be double-decked to allow for a direct connection between SR 836 and I-395. Mobility in Overtown will also be improved with the connection of NW 2 Avenue under I-395 and improvements to arterial roads.

That’s $160 billion worth of goods trucked each year between Detroit in the US state of Michigan and the Canadian city of Windsor in the province of Ontario - the Windsor-Detroit Corridor. There are several types of crossings, but the vast majority of commercial traffic must use the 2.3km Ambassador Bridge (see box). A new bridge was initially prop
