Canada's new bridge?

Plans are in hand in Canada for a replacement for the Pattullo Bridge.

Plans are in hand in Canada for a replacement for the Pattullo Bridge. The current bridge link is ageing and a study has discounted a refurbishment of this structure as not being technically feasible. The bridge crosses the Fraser River and it is hoped that the replacement will be ready by 2020. Various alternatives have been evaluated and a new bridge is considered the most likely. The construction of a new six-lane bridge would cost US$1.03 billion. However, the new bridge might feature four lanes in a bid to cut costs. It is not yet clear whether the bridge would be tolled.

    In Uganda planning is underway for the upgrade of the Kampala-Jinja route. Preparations are being made for a new tolled highway connecting with capital Kampala. The upgrade will see the route being widened with four lanes for much of the length, six lanes on the approach to Kampala and up to eight lanes where vehicle densities will be heaviest to carry the capital’s traffic. The construction work is expected to cost some US$74 million and the new link will connect with the existing Kampala-Entebbe highway.

    Technical investigations have highlighted structural issues with a bridge on a key bridge link on a highway in Quebec, Canada. The bridge on the 20 East highway close to the Pierre-Laporte exit in Lévis requires repair work. The bridge was built in 1965 and will be completely rebuilt so that a third lane can be added to the 20 East highway as far as the Président-Kennedy exit in Lévis. A contract has been awarded to Cima+-Dessau for the work, which is expected to commence in 2013.
