Urban road safety is a key problem in Europe, an issue that needs to be addressed as a priority. That is the finding of a new report by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). The ETSC’s report reveals that road deaths on urban roads decreased at around half the rate of those on rural roads over the period 2010-2017. The report also shows that vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, account for 70% of those killed and seriously injured on urban roads.

Colas has won a five-year contract in partnership with Halcrow and Costain for Area 12 in the UK. The contract is for €73 million and is for some 1,200km of major roads and motorways in the counties of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. The company also has contracts for Area 10 and Area 14 in the north-west and north-east of England as well as Area 7 in the Midlands. In total these four contracts are worth €387 million and give Colas responsibility over 3,500km of major roads and motorways, equating to 32%
