VIDEO – California freeway bridge demolition in progress

July 20, 2015
A bridge demolition job is underway in California at present. The Carmenita Road Bridge, which crosses the Santa Ana Freeway, is being removed in stages. The work is being carried out at night when the I-5 route is closed to traffic, so as to minimise the impact for daytime peak traffic flow. The work is being carried out by a specialist contractor on behalf of 5246 Caltrans in the Santa Fe Springs area. The three week job is being closed overnight seven days a week between Rosecrans and Valley View avenues. The work forms part of the Carmenita Road Interchange project. The new Carmenita Bridge has been built and features four traffic lanes in either direction, compared with two lanes for the old bridge now being demolished.

A Demag CC 3800-1 crane with an 84m-long main boom was recently set up in Germany without a Superlift counterweight to save space. The jobsite was the replacement of the old viaduct on the A45 Freeway that spans the Lahn River near Dorlar in Germany. Bietigheim-Bissingen-based crane service provider Wiesbauer solved the site’s space issues by using a Demag CC 3800-1. “This site required us to lift loads of 96-148tonnes at radii of 40-64m, so there was no option but to use a crawler crane in the 650tonne c
