In Oman plans are in hand for a major road widening project. The project calls for the widening of the 715km Adam-Thumrait highway. Local contractor, Ghantoot Transport and General Contracting Establishment (GTGC) made an offer of US$285.7 million for phase one of the project. GTGC also offered $229.9 million for the second phase of the project. A new road planned in Honduras will connect San Pedro Sula with Puerto Cortes. The project cost has been estimated at US$150 million. Plans also include additional works to help reduce congestion in San Pedro Sula. Coalianza is the agency in Honduras that handles the promotion of public-private partnerships (PPPs) and has said that the tender process is due to commence in October 2014.
Work on a 108km road connecting Irba Moda with Wadera in Ethiopia has now been completed. This upgraded road now features an asphalt surface along its length. The work was carried out by Turkish contractor Ahmet Aydeniz Construction Company. The contractor is now hopeful of winning further tenders in Ethiopia, which has a major infrastructure investment programme underway at present.
Work is now being carried out on a new expressway around the Chinese city of Shenzhen. This new route will form part of the Pearl River Delta expressway network and will also connect with 12 other national highways and expressways. The 76km expressway is due to open to traffic in 2018. The project is complex as it will include 12 tunnels and 82 bridges, with the overall cost estimated at US$4.35 billion.
