Liebherr is weathering the current financial situation rather better than some other firms, having seen turnover increase 9.8% to €4.4 billion in the first half of 2012, compared with the previous year. Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has invested over US$150.93 million (SEK1bn) in expanding capacity and construction equipment offering in China and had secured a leading position in national wheeled loader and excavator sales, said Volvo CE president Pat Olney. The Swedish construction equipment manufacturer is also keen to develop its SDLG brand, which, Olney stressed, has helped Volvo CE secure its status in the Chinese wheeled loader and excavator market.

China’s Anhui province will be spending US$40.06billion (CNY 250bn) on road construction by the end of 2016. The province has been forecast to have 3,500km of Class 1 road and over 1,500km of highway by the end of that period. The province is also set to have six civil airports by December 2016.

A 24 year old Vietnamese Batman enthusiast has built his own version of the Batbike, using parts from a small Suzuki motorcycle and from a car. The ingenious bike features novel steering and suspension designs, as well as a fake weapons system, and can be ridden at speeds of up to 90km/h. From the UK comes a curious tale about a bus passenger with an unusual appetite. Police in Paignton in Devon have been seeking the whereabouts of a young male who began eating a leather seat in the bus in which he was travelling.
