China’s Heilongjiang Province sets road expansion budget

China's Heilongjiang Province plans to develop its transport infrastructure. The authorities in the province have set a budget of US$2.99 billion to develop road links as well as waterways. The plans call for the construction of 364km of new highways, upgrading 450km of existing rural roads and building 6,400km of new rural roads. Kosovo-Macedonia highway under construction

The Bechtel Enka joint venture partnership has completed the first 20km section of the Kosovo Route 6 highway which links Pristina with Macedonia. This is the first third of the 60km highway that will connect Kosovo’s capital, Pristina with neighbouring Macedonia. India plans upgrading roads to highways

India’s Madhya Pradesh State is developing plans to upgrade existing roads to highway status. The programme will see up to 2,000km of roads being widened with extra lanes being added as well as new safety measures being installed. The aim of this programme is to boost connectivity in the state, with the plans have been developed by the State Government and now being submitted to India’s Central Government for approval. New Malaysia highway link under construction

The first stages of the construction work for the expressway connecting the Jelapang with Batu Kawan in Malaysia are now underway. The 116km Jelapang-Selama-Batu Kawan Expressway (Jelas) is expected to take 36 months to be built and the project is worth some US$1.12 billion. The project forms part of the development plans for Malaysia’s Northern Corridor and will help boost economic activity in Ipoh and Penang.

Germany is pushing ahead with its plan to charge tolls for use of its national Autobahn highway network. The plans have attracted a high degree of controversy as Germany’s Autobahn system, the world’s first national highway network, has been free for use by car drivers since its inception in the 1930s. Young powered two wheelers are most at risk of crashing. That is the key finding of a recent report into powered two wheeler crashes in Europe. A joint venture team is to carry out the key Zuidasdok project in the Netherlands. The Zuidplus joint venture team comprises the partners Fluor, Heijmans and Hochtief. Hungary’s M44 dual carriageway project looks set to be further extended by around 61.4km. Plans are being set for the construction of an additional three sections of the route, with the work looking to cost in excess of €471 million.
