The Transportation Research Board (TRB) AFB20 Committee on Roadside Safety Design is hosting the First International Roadside Safety Conference. Called the 1st IRSC, the Safer Roads, Saving Lives, Saving Money event will be held from June 12th-15th, 2017 in San Francisco, California. This is the first time the Roadside Safety Committee has conducted such a conference that will include an exhibition and a total immersion into Roadside Safety.

Delays have hit a major highway construction project in Singapore. Work on the 21.5km North-South Corridor was originally planned to start towards the end of 2017. However, construction will now commence in 2018. The delays to the start have been cauaed by the need for further revisions to the plans. When complete the new North-South Corridor highway will provide a connection between the northern region and the city. China’s Qinghai Province is setting out plans for major improvements to its road network. The authorities in Qinghai Province have set out a budget of US$28.97 billion for a series of road upgrades to improve the network, which will be carried out over the next five years. The province has already embarked on a series of road upgrades and by 2020, the aim is to boost the road network by 10,000km. A highway upgrade in Vietnam will help improve links with neighbouring Cambodia. Work is needed to upgrade the 80km stretch of highway, despite improvements carried out 10 years ago. The route links Ho Chi Minh City with the Cambodian border and is important for trade and transport between the two nations. Ringway, part of Eurovia UK, won the Highways England southwest area Maintenance and response contract. The 15-year term starts 1 July and is worth between nearly €18-35 million a year. Ringway will be responsible for maintenance of 1,695km of strategic road network within the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Consultant AECOM is now working with Highways England on improvements to the busy A303 in the UK. The road upgrades will be carried out between Amesbury and Berwick South Down along a 13km section of the A303 route. AECOM will work with its supply chain partners Mace and Mouchel on the project. As the current alignment for the A303 passes just 165m from the Stonehenge World Heritage site (WHS), there is a strong need to redevelop the route so that it causes less harm to this important archaeological area. A new road tunnel project is planned for the city of Melbourne in Australia. Construction is set to commence in 2018 and will take until 2022 to complete. The work will be carried out by a joint venture comprising CPB Contractors, the Australian subsidiary of German contractor Hochtief, and engineering firm John Holland. Work on the new North-South Highway in Vietnam is now underway, with preparatory work having commenced in 2016 and construction scheduled for completion in 2020. The project is being carried out under the PPP model, with initial funding being provided by a system of Government Bonds. The project is expected to cost US$2.43 billion to complete. Funding worth €155 million will be required for a new bridge project for Montenegro. The project is for the construction of the Verige Bridge, which will provide a new link at the Bay of Kotor. The bridge will connect with Tivat Airport and is also intended to form a section of the Adriatic Highway, which is part of the E65 Trans-European route. The cost of a major highway project being carried out in Bangladesh has been reduced significantly. The 192km highway connecting capital Dhaka with Chittagong will now cost US$427.8 million, instead of the $$475.1 million originally expected. Reductions in the costs of materials have helped lower the overall pricetag for the project, while the fact that the work has remained within schedule means there has been no need for the contingency funds that were forecast.
