The Canadian province of Quebec plans to build a US$219 million bridge across the St Lawrence River alongside the existing Mercier Bridge in the city of Montreal. Construction is underway on a key highway link in the UAE. The project is costing close to US$218 million and connects Jumeirah district with the Parallel Roads and Al Khail Road. One of the significant portions of the work is the construction of a flyover at the intersection of the First Al-Khalil Street and Latifa Bint Hamdan. Proposals are being put forward for a major motorway project in Thailand. Costing an estimated US$1.16 billion, the tender process for the Bang-pa-in-Nakhon Sawan motorway project is expected to commence in 2019. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project is due to start in due course. Another motorway project planned is for the Hat Yai-Sadao link. This last will be carried out under the PPP model and tendering is expected to commence in 2018.

A new highway link is planned for South Eastern Nigeria. The US$154.4 million project will connect Odukpani Itu in Cross River State with Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibome State. Approval for the project has been given by Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC). Up to US$571 million (NZ$812 million) is being provided by the New Zealand Government to repair an earthquake damaged stretch of State Highway 1 (SH1). The section being repaired lies between Christchurch and Picton and was heavile damaged by the earthquake that struck in November 2016. A portion of the necessary repair work has already been carried out. Some additional funding will be provided by New Zealand’s National Land Transport Fund to pay for further road repair works to other coastal connections.

Brazil is planning a series of highway maintenance projects in a bid to tackle it serious backlog of works. Improvement works will be carried out on the BR 158, BR 163 and BR 364 highways, which have been prioritised for their importance to transport and the Brazilian economy.
