Around US$231 million has been budgeted for road development work, including building new links and maintaining existing roads. Financing worth US$238 million has been secured for planned road upgrades and improvements in Nicaragua. The funding comes in the shape of a loan from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI). The upgrade works will be carried out to just over 194km of roads across the country. These works form part of the Nicaraguan Government’s VII Road Improvement and Renovation Programme. The Colombian city of Cali has made positive steps in reducing the number of crashes involving its city buses. Data shows that there were 101 crashes during January and February 2018, compared with 132 in the same period in 2017. Of the 101 bus crashes, 71 also involved cars, 16 also involved motorcycles and nine involved pedestrians. There have been three fatalities involving bus crashes in this time. Trinity Industries is setting out plans to spin-off its infrastructure-related businesses to Trinity stockholders. Scott Beasley, the currently the group chief financial officer (CFO) of Trinity’s Construction, Energy, Marine and Components businesses, will be the future CFO of the new infrastructure company upon completion of the spin-off. The French firm Vinci has won the contract for extension works to the highway network in New Zealand capital Auckland. The deal is worth US$515 million and will be handled by Vinci’s New Zealand-based subsidiary HEB Construction. The work will take 36 months to complete and is for a new highway connector section joining the Upper Harbor Highway (State Highway 18) with the Northern Motorway (State Highway 1).

Three new expressway projects are planned for China's Hubei Province. Building the new links will cost US$2.17 billion. One of the projects is for a 47.6km link of the route running from Zaoyang to Qianjiang and featuring two lanes in either direction. Another project is for a 24.9km stretch of the route from Qichun to Taihu, again with two lanes in either direction. The third project is for a 61.9km stretch of the route from Qianli to Jiangling.

Tajikistan has plans to build 18 new highway bridges in its Gorno-Badakhshan region. This forms part of its strategy, ‘Strengthening of Critical Infrastructure for Protection from Natural Hazards’. Funding worth US$50 million for the programme is being provided by the International Development Association. The timeline calls for the bridge construction work to be complete by 2023.

Children are at serious risk on Europe’s road network. This is the finding of a new report from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC). According to the ETSC’s analysis of crash data, more than 8,000 children aged 0-14 years have been killed in road traffic collisions over the last 10 years in the European Union. Half of the children killed were travelling in cars, a third were walking and 13% were cycling, with one in every 13 child deaths in the European Union being the result of a road collision.
