Platooning presentation for the UK’s Microlise Transport Conference

The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) will present findings from the UK’s platooning truck trials at the Microlise Transport Conference next month in the UK. The presentation will include an assessment of the effects of fuel use, harmful tailpipe emissions, congestion and road safety. The trial, according to Rob Wallis, TRL’s chief executive officer, aims to provide an independent impact assessment and to quantify possible benefits and drawbacks of the technology.

EastLink demonstrates hands-free driving in Melbourne

A motorway operator in Australia’s Victoria state has televised a live demonstration of automated driving along a section of one of its roads. 19th century Newhall Road Bridge gets 21st century makeover

A Sheffield bridge with a history dating back to the 17th century has been strengthened, repaired and restored by Amey. Newhall Road bridge over the River Don is one of 240 road bridges and culverts in Sheffield to be given a new lease of life thanks to investment linked to Sheffield City’s €2.5 billion Streets Ahead highway maintenance contract.

Mombasa-Tanga link faces delays over design changes

Kenya has blamed design changes for delaying the start of work on a road linking the port of Mombasa to the Tansanian port of Tanga. The change to the key road’s design is from a single to dual carriageway along a section of the 445km transnational highway. However, the African Development Bank (AfDB), the principal financier of the project, said the Kenyan government itself was slow in completing preliminary studies, such as road designs, in order to start construction.

Adani-led consortium wins Chhattisgarh highway project

A consortium led by Adani Enterprises has won a US$175 million highway contract in Chhattisgarh from the National Highways Authority of India. Work in Chhattisgarh, one of India’s 29 states, will be done under a 15-year Hybrid Annuity Model and take nearly two years. UK government pledges pothole pounds

The UK government will hand out to a number of councils in England extra money for pothole repairs, said Chris Grayling, transport secretary. Around €125 million will be shared out, with the south-west county of Devon getting the lion’s share – nearly €5.2 million. The funding is in addition to €86 million Pothole Action Fund and the almost €7 billion set aside for improving local roads across the entire UK.

Polaqua signs S6 dual carriageway deal and Tri-City contract

Polish contractor Polaqua has signed a deal worth €193 million to design and build a 20km section of S6 dual carriageway. Completion is scheduled for mid-2021. Polaqua will also build a 3km section as part of the expansion of the ring road around the Tri-City area in northern Poland.
