Testing and striping underway for Seattle’s Alaskan Way tunnel

Crews have been working flat out on the Alaskan Way Tunnel in Seattle to install and test thousands of components and 90 interconnected systems. Volvo CE’s electric quarry operation commences trials

Volvo CE is commencing operations of its low emission quarrying operation in Sweden. The facility has a strong focus on electric machines, with diesel-electric hybrid equipment also being used. According to the firm, this is a world first for a quarry facility that can be run almost 'emission-free'. Uganda-Kenya road link receiving funding

Improvements to a key road link connecting Uganda with Kenya will benefit from a financing package provided by the African Development Bank (AfDB). The 73km section of road connecting Kapchorwa in Uganda with Suam in Kenya will receive US$105 million of funding. This will help improve trade and transport between the two nations.

China’s expressway expansion programme continues

China continues to develop its expressway network. According to official figures from China’s Ministry of Transport, the expressway network grew by 8130km during 2017. This was an increase of 6.5% over 2016. A further 5.,000km of expressways should be added to the network during 2018. In all China’s tolled expressways extend for some 132,638km.

Concern at poor US road safety

Concern is being expressed in the US by the National Safety Council (NSC), which believes the country’s road safety is making no progress. According to the NSC, the current trends suggest that the US will see no reductions in road deaths for the third consecutive year. Its preliminary estimates suggest that the US will again have a road fatality rate of around 40,000 for 2018. Highways England reports that the Silverlink triple-deck roundabout in North Tyneside is 80% complete and on schedule for opening in March next year. The €83 million project involves lowering the A19 highway underneath the Silverlink roundabout and A1058 Coast Road.
