India developing safer roads pilot programme

A pilot programme to develop safer roads is being planned for India’s capital Delhi. The Indian Government is developing the programme which will see 10 roads in Delhi being redesigned in a bid to boost road safety, particularly for vulnerable road users. Once the eight month pilot programme has been completed, the aim is to introduce similar measures right across the city. Bhutan road deaths could be reduced

Bhutan has had some success in controlling road safety but could further reduce its death tool, according to the Global Status Report on Road Safety 2015. The report, published by the World Health Organisation (WHO), says that the country has more than 15 road deaths/100,000 people. This is higher compared than Pakistan at 14.2 deaths/100,000 people and 13.6/100,000 people in Bangladesh. However, India has a higher fatal crash rate than Bhutan with 16.6 deaths/100,000. Widening of key highway planned for St Petersburg

Plans are underway to widen a stretch of the Western High-Speed Diameter (WHSD) around St Petersburg in Russia. The northern section of the WHSD, near Beloostrov, will be widened from four to six lanes. The work will be carried out by Northern Capital Highway (NCH), a consortium owned by VTB and Gazprombank. This consortium is currently building the central section of the WHSD, as well as operating the tolled northern and southern sections under a PPP concession agreement. Major upgrade planned for key Mexico highway

A major upgrade of Mexico’s Atizapan-Atlacomulco road link is being planned. The work is expected to commence in 2016 and will cost in the region of US$182.63 million. The project will be carried out by OHL Mexico, the Mexican subsidiary of Spanish form OHL. Once the upgrade is complete, the route will be able to carry heavier traffic volumes than at present and the extra capacity will cut delays on the route, as well as increasing safety.
UN sets global target for road safety

The UN has set a global benchmark for reducing traffic fatalities on the world’s road network. Data shows that every year, almost 1.3 million people are killed in road crashes around the globe, according to information gathered by the World Health Organisation (WHO). In a bid to tackle this major problem, world leaders recently vowed to halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2020. This target was agreed at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York.

Bolivia: Chinese loan is for infrastructure projects

China will loan Bolivia around US$7.5 billion for all types of infrastructure projects, according to the Bolivian vice-president Alvaro Garcia Linera. The loan will arrive in tranches with different interest rates, from a low of less than 1% and up to 4%. It will likely increase the country's foreign debt to GDP ratio from 17% to 35%. India: government mulls making NH-8 an expressway to Daulapura

India is considering a 28km expressway connecting the south of Indira Gandhi Airport in Delhi to Daulapura on National Highway-8. The project, which hopes to ease traffic on NH-8 that connects Gurgaon and Jaipur, is estimated to cost more than US$5 billion, according to a report in the Business Standard. Crashes are the cause of around 7,000 deaths in Venezuela/year. Road crashes also cause 20,000 serious injuries in Venezuela/year. There are around 22.7 fatalities/100,000 of population in Venezuela/year. By comparison, Brazil has some 23.4 road deaths/100,000 of population while neighbouring Colombia has around 16.8 road deaths/100,000 of population.
Increase in road deaths in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s road deaths are increasing. Official data from the country’s Transport Ministry shows that 2,200 people were killed in road crashes in the period from January-September 2015. This is an increase of 349 over the same period for 2014. In all there were 36,050 road crashes in 2014 while there was a total of 2,440 deaths.
UN report shows world road deaths level out

The global status report on road safety 2015 published by the United Nations (UN) shows that the number of world road deaths has levelled out at 1.25 million/year. This report is based on data from 180 countries. The report also shows that the highest road traffic fatality rate are in low-income countries. Terex appointing new CEO/president to lead business

The Terex Corporation has named John L Garrison, Junior as its new CEO and president, effective from November 2nd, 2015. He will also become a member of the Terex board of directors, also effective November 2nd, 2015. Garrison will succeed outgoing CEO Ronald M DeFeo, who will continue to serve as executive chairman of the company through December 31st, 2015. DeFeo will continue as a consultant for Terex after December 31st, 2015 through December 31, 2016.

Global equipment provider Terex Construction has taken on three students for its 2015/16 internship programme in the United Kingdom. The students – all second-year off-road vehicle design students at the agricultural college Harper Adams University – will work for a year at the Terex manufacturing facility in the city of Coventry.
