Engine supplier Volvo Penta is developing its partnership with Sandvik

Volvo Penta and Sandvik are co-operating on engine supply. Under the terms of the deal, Volvo Penta and Sandvik Mining and Construction have an agreement intended to boost the long-term competitiveness of Sandvik products. With rapid advances in technology and emission legislation, not only the choice of technology but also the choice of engine supplier has become an important issue for equipment manufacturers for the construction industry.
John Deere reveals SCR solution at INTERMAT

John Deere Power Systems unveiled its solution for EU Stage IV emissions regulations at INTERMAT. It saw the company introduce an SCR catalyst and diesel exhaust fluid dosing unit to its Stage IIIb engine platforms from 56-560kW. “SCR was not our preferred technology path but it has proved to be the best way for us to maintain particulate levels while reducing NOx to meet EU Stage IV emissions regulations,” explained Xavier Adam, market planning manager for John Deere Power Systems.
Scania and Doosan extend co-operation

Scania and the South Korean equipment manufacturer Doosan Infracore have agreed to further increase their current co-operation. According to a Letter of Intent, from 2014 Scania will not only supply engines for Doosan’s articulated dump trucks and large wheel loaders, but also other products within the Doosan range. “In the long term we are estimating delivery of well over 3,000 engines annually to Doosan Infracore. Cat reveals EU Stage IV solution at INTERMAT

Caterpillar announced its EU Stage IV emissions solution at INTERMAT for C7.1 and C13 industrial engines. With power ratings from 116kW to 225kW, the 7.1litre six-cylinder C7.1 gets an SCR catalyst and diesel exhaust fluid dosing system as part of the exhaust after-treatment process. The larger C13 – 13litre, 287-387kW power sector – also gets an SCR and diesel exhaust fluid after-treatment system, but retains its active regeneration process. Hybrid excavator offers 20% fuel saving and cut in CO2

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) is evaluating demand for its ZH200 Hybrid excavator in Europe. The 20 tonne excavator, which is already sold in Japan, uses a hydraulic/electric swing motor to generate electrical power under braking, which is stored in a capacitor alongside the machine’s cooling pack. The electrical power is used to boost slew speed and also feeds a secondary hydraulic motor, to assist the diesel engine when there is a demand for hydraulic power.

INTERMAT launch for Lombardini’s KDI engines

Lombardini, part of the Kohler Group, used INTERMAT to reveal its latest KDI engine series that meets forthcoming emissions regulations without the need for a diesel particulate filter. The KDI series – Kohler Direct Injection – currently includes a 1.9-litre three-cylinder, and four-cylinder 2.5litre engines. A larger 3.4litre engine will follow. Epec is hoping to be a controlling influence at INTERMAT. The Finnish firm’s managing director, Jouni Matikainen, said the 32-bit processor and increased calculating power of the new 5050 control unit for mobile construction machines had created a “very powerful” unit. Matikainen said that all Epec’s range of control units, including the new 2024 model being exhibited at the show, have been made to cope with extreme application conditions, including dust-heavy mining.
