The notable improvement in road safety statistics for Europe paint a promising picture with an 8% drop in fatalities recorded for 2013 compared with the previous year. This continues the steady reduction in the fatality rate, having followed a previous drop in road deaths. And it highlights how measures to control speeding and enforce laws against drink-driving have had a positive effect.

A woman from the city of Aberdeen has set a Scottish record by failing her driving theory test 40 times. The 22 year old woman beat the previous record set by a Glaswegian man, also 22 years old, who failed his theory test 36 times. Serious issues have been realised in the Netherlands, with an increase in the rate of road casualties. There were 629 road deaths in the Netherlands in 2016, eight more than in 2015.
