Uzbekistan's road revamp continues

Uzbekistan's highway network is benefiting from considerable investment at present.

Uzbekistan's highway network is benefiting from considerable investment at present. The latest boost comes from a loan worth US$167.s million being provided by the 2417 Islamic Development Bank (IDB). This is being targeted specifically at upgrading and improving the national highway M-39 in Uzbekistan's Surkhandarya province. The IDB loan is granted for a 20 year term, including a four-year grace period.

    In Romania the road authorities have signed a deal for the construction of a 22km stretch of highway in a contract worth €91 million. The Portuguese contractor Monte Adriano will construct the section linking Nadlac with Pecica. Romania has pledged to improve and expand its highway network with the construction of new links, and much of the funding for its highway plans has been provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

    Romania’s road network is developing to meet demand. Data from country’s National Institute of Statistics (INS) reveals that the total length of highways in the country grew by 9.4%, or by 64km, in 2015 compared to 2014. Meanwhile highways now account for 4.2% of the total length of Romania’s road routes. At the end of 2015, public roads totalled 86,080km, of which 17,606km, or 20.5% of the total, were national roads, 35,316km, or 41%, were county roads and up to 33,158km, or 38.5%, were communal roads.
