New tolled highways planned for South Africa

The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) is planning the construction of a further five toll roads. A feasibility study is underway for the N12 route connecting Kimberley with Johannesburg, the Limpopo N1 Botlokwa Interchange, the N3 road from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, the N1 connecting Kroonstad to Winburg and a N1 ring road at Musina.

    The South African government is engaging with the private sector to review alternatives to the e-tolling system on Gauteng highways. The move was announced by the country's deputy president, Kgalema Motlanthe, who repeated his earlier assertion that the "most equitable way" to fund the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) is via the user-pay system. He added that the underlying cause for frustration relating to the user-pay system should be resolved by engaging with the private sector.

The country's national highways agency, the ANA, has issued the Japanese group Cojaal with a second formal request to restart work on a 359km section of the highway.     The Holtekamp bridge; the Medan-Kualanamu Flyover; the Raja Ampat Ring Road; and the Oksibil-Waropko Road are among 19 proposed new infrastructure projects submitted to the Indonesian Ministry of Finance.
