Bulgaria sees improvement in road safety

Bulgaria is seeing an improvement in its latest road safety statistics. In 2017 there were 6,888 crashes on Bulgaria’s road network, a drop of 7% from the previous year. Meanwhile 6,800 people were injured in road crashes in Bulgaria in 2017 while there were 682 road related fatalities in the same period. The improved road safety presents a notable and positive change for Bulgaria. However the country still had the second highest rate of road fatalities/head of population of any country in the EU.

    The latest data available from France reveals a continuing reduction in road safety fatalities. The Ministry of the Interior has produced figures showing that road fatalities dropped 8% to 3,645 in 2012, when compared with 2011. Notable reductions were seen in deaths of motorcyclists, down 14.5% and car drivers, down 8.6%.   • Rail crossing safety questioned in France

    The safety of rail crossings is being questioned in France. This follows a fatal collision involving a school bus and a train. Five of the children on the bus were killed in the crash, with another 18 people being injured, including 14 children. The bus had been carrying 20 children when it was involved in the collision with the train, at a crossing close to the Spanish border and around 18km west of Perpignan.
